What's the Weather? Animated Step-by-Step

What’s the Weather?  is an Animated Step-by-Step,  designed to support the weather portion of an early childhood Morning Meeting routine.  It is built around the song of the same name and is sung to the tune of Oh My Darling Clementine.

What’s the weather?
What’s the weather?
What’s the weather like today?
Oh (weather person’s name) can you tell us

What’s the weather like today?

Is it sunny?
Is it cloudy?
Is it rainy out today?
Is it snowy?
Is it windy?
What’s the weather like today?  (Foggy has been added to the resource even though technically it is not part of the song)

These weather concepts are all realized through animations, e.g. after reading “Is it cloudy” a click (designated by the star) will cause the clouds to roll in and the house darkens; after reading “Is it snowy?” a click causes the snow to fall and accumulate on the roof and tree. The symbol representing that weather condition appears after the initial 'weather animation'. On the last slide the weather person must give their weather forecast by tapping on the appropriate weather symbol.

I typically introduce this resource as a group lesson to ensure students truly understand the various weather options. We then revisit the song in the static ‘alternate version’ using the song button to add a ‘sing along track’.

Each day, a student photo face can be substituted for the graphic face currently provided in the downloaded product. If you are using an interactive whiteboard to display your Animated Step-by-Step, use the pen tools to write in the name to dictation ("Looks like our weather person today is _________.  That's right, Javier is our weather person.  Javier could you please spell your name for me? ")

What’s the Weather? is available in three formats: Regular, SymbolStix-supported, and PCS-supported.  The SymbolStix-supported version was highlighted throughout this post.

Be sure to have some fun today!
