Spotlight on Literacy

All Animated Step-by-Steps® expose students to print and provide numerous ‘teachable moments’, especially when using the pen tools of the interactive whiteboard. Lately, I’ve become interested in developing resources that offer a greater emphasis on literacy. Here are six fun ASbySs that offer a greater literacy emphasis.

Betty Botter is a great resource for exploring how vowel variation can alter pronunciation and meaning. “Betty Botter bought some butter. But she said the butter’s bitter. If I put it in my batter. It will make my batter bitter” etc.

Apples & Bananas also explores vowel variation using a nonsensical chant that varies the line, “ I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas” … I like to ote, ote, ote, o-pples and bo-no-nos.

CVC Mystery Balls is a guessing game. A colored ball rolls on the page. An auditory clue is provided. The contents of the ball is then revealed, e.g. cat/’cat’ and students are encouraged to provide the CVC letters for the mystery item. The final animation provides the correct CVC print.

Mystery Animals is similar to the former but targets the names of zoo animals and farm animals. A colored ball rolls on to the page and an auditory clue is provided. A print cue is also provided with only a few print cues inserted, e.g. z __ __ __ __. The mystery animal is then revealed, e.g., zebra / ‘zebra’ and students are invited to fill in the missing letters of the animal’s name.

B-I-N-G-O & Friends  provides visual support for the Bingo Song and extends that framework to a variety of other farm animals (Cat-Kitty, Horse-Winny, Cow-Bessy, Goat-Lucky, Pig-Porky, Goose-Gammy, Duck-Daffy, and Chick-Jazzy).

Beat the Clock is a variation of the ‘hangman game’. Students are given 12 chances to guess the letters of a mystery word, i.e. __ __ __ __ __.  An alphabet chart is provided to strike off the letters used in the game.

All six resources are available in three formats (Regular, SymbolStix, PCS) from the Teachers Pay Teachers site. They are also available as a Literacy Bundle, offering six resources at a 20% discount.
